The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got off to a strong start Thursday night, followed by a solid full day on Friday at the box office.
The Sony superhero film earned $35.5 million at the box office, with Thursday's late showings included, which is in line with expectations. Forbes reports the film is still on track to earn around $90 million to $95 million. The start puts it right behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which debuted with $36.9 million in its first full day.
The opening is almost exactly what The Amazing Spider-Man grossed back in 2012. Sequels are expected to open bigger, so while a solid start, Sony likely was hoping for a little better. Still, the first film had the advantage of opening during the summer with school already out in most areas.
With no other studios wanting to open opposite Spider-Man 2, the
top performers at the box office will be mostly holdovers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Other Woman was steady in its second Friday, grossing $4.8 million. The film has now earned $37.9 million domestically.
Heaven is for Real continues to do well as it earned another $2.4 million, which puts its domestic cume at $59 million. The Winter Soldier grossed $2.1 million and through five weeks has collected $231.5 million at the domestic box office.
Rio 2 rounds out the top five films after grossing another $1.7 million, which pushes the animated comedy past the $100 million mark.
The only other new movie of the weekend was Fox Searchlight's four-screen limited release of Belle, which grossed about $29,000.
