Michael Alig, who ran clubs in Manhattan before he pleaded guilty to a notorious 1996 murder, has been released from prison after 17 years. Alig has an active Twitter account, which was used to live-tweet his release from the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Utica, New York.

Alig, 48, pleaded guilty to the murder of Andre (Angel) Melendez in 1996, reports The New York Daily News, earning the nickname “Club kid killer.” Melendez was his drug dealer and the two got into an argument. Robert (Freeze) Riggs, a friend of Alig, hit Melendez with a hammer.

Then, Alig poured Drano down Melendez’s mouth and taped it shut while Melendez was in a bathtub. After Melendez died, Alig and Riggs cut up the victim’s body and dumped it in the Hudson River.

Both of the killers pleaded guilty and got 10 to 20 years in prison.

According to the Associated Press, the murder was chronicled in the 003 film Party Monster. Alig was played by Macaulay Culkin.

Alig used his Twitter account to chronicle his release, sharing images of himself having his first burrito and Starbucks coffee. While he was in prison, the account was run by an editor working on his book, Alig.

“Happy to be free and so grateful for this second chance,” Alig wrote in one tweet.
