What could be worse than a truck wrecking on a highway? With the truck hauling honeybees, that would be classified as being worse.
According to USA Today, the truck had 460 hives in its load when it crashed while the driver was heading toward northbound 1-95 in Delaware. The truck driver and his two passengers were taken to the hospital and all of them sustained bee stings, as well as minor injuries from the crash.
ABC News reported the number of bees range from 16 to 20 million bees. The truck was on Route 896 when it fell over after 6 p.m.
Sgt. Paul Shavack, a state police spokesman, said they had a plan put in place for how to remove a swarm of honeybees 14 years ago and this was the first time the plan was used.
Bee handlers were called in to go to the scene and help firefighters use water to spray the insects, as well as the truck and the crates, so they could settle them down.
USA Today also reported the bee handlers let police know that once it was nighttime, the bee activity would settle down. Then, they would be able to figure out which hives were salvageable before the truck could be removed from the scene.
