In a move that surprised no one, The Walt Disney Company has agreed to a contract extension for chairman Alan Horn. The 71-year-old has overseen some of the studio’s biggest hits over the past year following the Lone Ranger disaster.
Horn previously worked for Warner Bros. before joining Disney in June 2012. He replaced Rich Ross, who resigned in April 2012, following the John Carter flop.
Horn’s tenure did get off to a rocky start as he oversaw the completion of The Lone Ranger. The Johnny Depp Western flopped, but the studio quickly recovered with Monsters University, Thor: The Dark World and Frozen. Iron Man 3’s release earlier in 2013 also helped the studio.
So far, the studio has had success with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which acted as a summer blockbuster released in the spring. This summer, Maleficent and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters. Production on Star Wars: Episode VII is set to start soon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Horn will be under contract at the studio through 2018. His job includes overseeing worldwide Disney Studios operations. That covers production, distribution and marketing for all films produced by Disney, Pixar, Marvel and now Lucasfilm. Disney also DreamWorks Studios and Touchstone distribution.
The LA Times notes that Disney has not commented on the news.
