Though they have been deemed a “healthy alternative,” e-cigarettes could be making superbugs even more deadly.
E-cigarettes have gained a lot of publicity for being a “healthy alternative” and also for “glamorizing” smoking. It has become the latest trend and everyone is smoking them, even though they can be just as dangerous as cigarettes for your immune system.
It has been reported that the vapor found in e-cigarettes make superbugs, like MRSA, more toxic for the body. The vapor actually weakens the immune system and makes it harder for the body to fight back.
Laura Crotty Alexander, a researcher, said that, “Even if e-cigarettes may not be as bad as tobacco, they still have measurable detrimental effects on health.”
But wait, weren’t e-cigarettes always considered safer because of the lack of tar and chemicals that are used in making actual cigarettes? However, now it is believed that the vapor used in e-cigarettes actually make superbugs fight harder to survive.
It was shown that MRSA cells that were exposed to the e-cig vapor were three times as likely to live in the lungs of mice with pneumonia. Traditional cigarette smoke made it four times as likely to survive.
E-cigs may be “healthier” in some ways, but it needs to be known that they do not come without their risks.
