If early box office tracking is right Maleficent could be in for a strong opening weekend at the end of the month, while Adam Sandler's Blended might struggle on the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Disney's $180 million film is tracking to possibly open to a $60 million May 30 weekend opening, reports TheWrap. Tracking doesn't guarantee success, just more on how well the film is being marketed. Interest generated is mostly from young girls and their mothers.
The film opens opposite A Million Ways to Die in the West, which has also been tracking well and could gross $35 million for its first weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Western comedy likely won't reach the $54 million opening Seth MacFarlane's Ted managed two years ago.
Both films could do well in their first weekend as there is likely little overlap between audiences attracted to either.
Meanwhile, tracking has been weak for Sandler's upcoming comedy with Drew Barrymore Blended. If early tracking proves prophetic, the film could struggle to reach $25 million and that is even with the four-day weekend.
Part of the problem for the comedy is that the film will be opening up against X-Men: Days of Future Past, which itself could reach $125 million over the Memorial Day weekend.
