Hosni Mubarak, former Egyptian leader, is now facing three years of prison after he reportedly used over $17 million in public funding for himself.
The money was used to renovate his properties in Cairo and the red sea coast as well as back home. His sons Alaa and Gamal are also being convicted and face 4 years of prison.
The family was originally charged for misusing the funds meant to maintain presidential palaces this past February. However, the case was dropped because the family stated at the trial that the incident did not happen.
This Wednesday the case was retried and Judge Osama Shaheen convicted the Mubaraks. "Instead of abiding by the constitution and laws, he gave himself and his sons the freedom to take from public funds whatever they wanted to without oversight and without regard", he said according to BBC News.
This isn’t the first case Mubarak has had overturned and retried. Mubarak was charged with a lifelong prison term two years ago after he was convicted for killing protestors in 2011, Voice of America noted.
The Mubarak’s have been held in prison for the past 23 months. Hosni Mubarak has had some health challenges recently that may send him to the prison hospital. There is no word at this time if the 23 months already served will count towards the new charges.
