Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has signed on to join another major science fiction franchise. He is reportedly set to star in Terminator: Genesis in a major role.

The casting was reported by Deadline, which noted that Smith’s role will expand during the second and third films for Paramount’s planned trilogy.

It is not clear what part Smith will play, as many of the key roles familiar to the Terminator franchise have already been filled. Jai Courtney was tapped to play Kyle Reese, Emilia Clarke will star as Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke will play John Connor, who is destined to save the world. Hunger Games actor Dayo Okeniyi has also joined the cast to play the son of Miles Dyson.

Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back to play the T-800 and recently explained to MTV how he can play the role. He said that the flesh on the robot ages, even if the skeleton doesn’t.

Meanwhile, Screen Rant reported earlier this week that bodybuilder Aaron Williamson will play a younger T-800. He broke the news himself on Facebook, but later deleted the post.

Terminator: Genesis opens on July 1, 2015.
