Just when you thought Disney’s Frozen could not possibly make any more news, it comes back. Although the film is no longer in theaters in the U.S., it is still showing overseas and is now the fifth-highest grossing film in history.
Frozen is now up to $1.219 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo’s statistics. Just $400 million of that is from North America, making up 32.9 percent of its total gross. The film has been an international phenomenon, making $818.7 million in foreign markets.
The total now puts it ahead of Iron Man 3, also released by Disney. That film made $1.215 million before finishing its theatrical run last year.
In Japan alone, Frozen has been as monstrous as that giant snow creature Elsa sends after Anna and Kristoff. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it made another $7.2 million in Japan, bringing its total there to $195 million.
The only films to make more money in Japan are Titanic and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.
For the record, the four films ahead of Frozen on the overall worldwide chart are Avatar ($2.78 billion); Titanic ($2.186 billion); Marvel’s The Avengers ($1.518 billion); and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ($1.34 billion).
Frozen won two Oscars in March, Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Let It Go,” which was sung by Idina Menzel during the ceremony and in the film.
