Gerard Butler broke his streak of box office flops last year with Olympus Has Fallen and a sequel was quickly put into production. Now, that sequel has earned a release date and Focus Features has acquired the U.S. rights to the film.
London Has Fallen will be similar to Olympus Has Fallen, with Butler’s character now being forced to stop a plot to attack the funeral of a British prime minister. Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett and Radha Mitchell are all signed to return for the new film.
According to ComingSoon.net, Focus announced today that it acquired U.S. rights and has set an Oct. 2, 2015 release date.
FilmDistrict released Olympus Has Fallen in March 2013 and it became the more successful of the two ‘White House under attack’ movies of the year. The film grossed $161 million worldwide and only cost $70 million to make.
“Olympus Has Fallen took audiences by storm, and we're excited to raise the stakes with London Has Fallen as Gerard Butler returns in the lead. Moviegoers can expect another action-packed thrill ride,” Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel said in a statement.
