Sources say that the Golden State Warriors hired Steve Kerr to be the team's next head coach, stealing the most-talked about head coaching candidate away from the New York Knicks.
The Warriors offered the NBA analyst a five-year contract worth $25 million, according to multiple sources who spoke with ESPN. TNT was the first to break the news that Kerr was heading to the Warriors.
The Knicks were known to be interested in hiring Kerr to his first head coaching position, but sources say they were not willing to offer a five-year deal. He also was said to be interested in being close to his San Diego home.
Other sources say that though he was interested in the Warriors, he thought they were chasing Stan Van Gundy who went to the Detroit Pistons.
Yahoo Sports reported before the Warriors' signing that multiple sources claimed that the Knicks tried to increase their offer of a three-year contract to four in order to snag Kerr.
The Warriors moved quickly after firing head coach Mark Jackson early last week, despite the team trying to lobby for his return.
