In recent years, journalists have not gotten the chance to be the stars of conspiracy thrillers...or at least, in a good one. Last year's The Fifth Estate fumbled the ball, which makes the last one in recent memory be 2009's State of Play. There is no guarantee that the upcoming Kill the Messenger will change things, but its first quickly-edited trailer suggest that it may at least have a fighting chance.
Directed by Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter), this thriller stars a star-filled cast, including Jeremy Renner in the lead and Rosemarie DeWitt, Michael Kenneth Williams, Michael Sheen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Tim Blake Nelson, Oliver Pratt, Ray Liotta, Barry Pepper, Robert Patrick, Andy Garcia and Paz Vega rounding up its surrounding.
If anything, this appears to be a good dramatic starring vehicle for Renner, who, of late, has been splitting his work between supporting roles in Marvel movies and American Hustle or playing the lead of action flicks like The Bourne Legacy and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Whether or not this movie can possibly return the journalist genre back to its All the President's Men days will have to be determined on October 10.
