Actress Juliette Lewis is the latest to join Jem and the Holograms, bringing the live action adaptation of the ‘80s animated show some star power. She is also an experienced performer, so she should fit right in to the project.
Lewis will have a supporting role in the film, but it’s not known what part she will play, notes Deadline. She did perform in her own group, Juliette and the Licks through 2009, so it would not be surprising to see her perform in the movie.
Jem and the Holograms is based on the 1985-1988 animated series, which was based on the Hasbro dolls. The film version was announced in March by director John M. Chu, producer Jason Blum and music manager Scooter Braun. Aubrey Peeples (Nashville) was cast in April to star as Jem. Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau will play her backup group, the Holograms. Ryan Guzman has also joined the project.
Universal has agreed to distribute the film, which will center on Jem’s adventures through Los Angeles and her rise to becoming a pop star. Chu, Blumhouse Productions’ Blum and Braun’s SB Projects are producing, along with Hasbro.
Lewis was nominated for an Oscar for Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear. Her other credits include Natural Born Killers and Due Date. She can be seen in ABC’s upcoming Secrets & Lies series with Ryan Phillippe.
