Lee Marshall, who is best known as the current voice of the Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes cereal mascot Tony the Tiger, has died. He was 64-years-old.
Marshall died on April 26 in Santa Monica at a hospital, The Los Angeles Times confirmed on Tuesday. Son Jason Marshall VanBorssum told the paper that Marshall had esophageal cancer.
He was a beloved sports broadcaster and rock ‘n’ roll deejay, thanks to his deep tones. But he is known nationally for voicing Tony the Tiger for more than a decade.
The Huffington Post notes that Marshall first recorded “They’re grrrrreat!” in 1999 and took the role over full time in 2005 after Thurl Ravenscroft died at age 91.
Before voicing Tony, Marshall was stuck voicing cartoon villains. He also became popular as a wresting ring announcer and his interviews with wrestling stars.
Marshall was born in Los Angeles in 1949 and grew up in Hollywood. He is survived by wife Judie, his son, a stepdaughter and granddaughter.
“We are saddened by the loss of Lee Marshall. His talent and warmth helped bring Tony the Tiger to life and will always be fondly remembered,” a Kellogg spokesperson told the Huffington Post.
