A man was killed and his girlfriend injured in a shooting that allegedly was the end result of a 15-year feud revolving around the feeding of deer.
Police say that New Brighton, Minnesota resident Neal C. Zumberge opened fire on Wednesday morning on Todd G. Stevens and Jennifer Damerow Cleven because they called the cops on his son and he was sick and tired of them feeding deer in their yard, reports the Star Tribune. Authorities have charged him with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
Zumberge's wife also didn't help matters as she allegedly egged him on by saying, "Shoot, shoot, shoot, keep shooting." He fired on his neighbors with a 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun.
The 46-year-old Stevens died at the scene after being shot in the head, chest, abdomen and extremities. Cleven, 48, was hit twice in the abdomen, but survived.
She spoke with WCCO and said she heard shots and tried to get her husband to run away. She said his last words were, "he shot me."
Cleven said that she believes Zumberge was angry that Stevens got his son arrested. But they also feuded over deer that Stevens fed and Zumberge would later shoot and leave dead in their yard. Zumberge believed that he contracted Lyme disease because of the deer.
