Marine who fell from aircraft in North Carolina found dead

A Marine who fell from an aircraft during a training exercise was found dead on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Free Press Newspapers, Steven Hancock, a crew chief with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing fell from an MV-2BB Osprey during a training flight on Monday evening.

After he disappeared, more than 100 Marines were brought in to search on the ground and in the air, 1st Lt. Hector Alejandro, spokesman for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing said.

NBC News noted that no one is sure how Hancock was able to fall out of the cargo door.

“We did not learn of his fall immediately and we are not sure why," said Alejandro.

Hancock’s body was discovered on state forestry land about 96 miles south of Raleigh.

"We deeply mourn the loss of a member of the 2nd Maine Aircraft Wing family today. I'd like to extend my sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of our Marine," Major General Robert Hedelund, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general said in a statement.
