Maya Angelou Elementary School in Miami's Allapattah area, mourned the death of Maya Angelou today.
ABC's Local 10 News reports that the elementary school named after the famed poet grieved her death today.
The school was dedicated to Angelou by the Miami-Dade school district in 1995. It has 741 students aged 3 to 11.
Principle Adrena Williams shares the impact Angelou had in her life.
"My dad raised my sisters and I to be avid readers," Williams said. "I started reading her poems since I was a little girl."
"It's a great loss ... She is the epitome of a strong black woman, a leader and a mentor," she added.
The school's flag was hung at half-staff today, and there was a moment of silence in Angelou's memory.
The Boston Herald also reports that President Barack Obama was also mourning the loss of Angelou today.
President Obama awarded Angelou the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor for a civilian, in 2011.
"Michelle and I join millions around the world in remembering one of the brightest lights of our time: a brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman," Obama said.
Angelou passed away in her home in North Carolina. She was 86 years old.
