Although much remains unknown about the planned Prometheus sequel, Michael Fassbender has confirmed that he will return for the second film.
According to Collider, Fassbender confirmed his role in the sequel while promoting X-Men: Days of Future Past, although he did not offer much more information, and admitted that he was unsure when filming would begin.
Prometheus was released in June 2012. It was a loose prequel to director Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien, which was a massive critical and box-office success, and which in 2002 was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress for being culturally significant.
Alien spawned four sequels or spin-offs, including the James Cameron-directed Aliens in 1986, but Prometheus was the first for which Scott returned to direct.
Prometheus was a box-office success, grossing more than $400 million worldwide, although the film received mixed reviews from critics.
It is still unknown whether Scott will return to direct the sequel, although Michael Fassbender is hoping that he does.
"I love Ridley," Fassbender said, according to NME. "He's a master filmmaker."
Earlier this year, The Wrap reported that screenwriter Michael Green, who co-wrote The Green Lantern, and who is writing a screenplay for another Scott movie, would rewrite Jack Paglen’s original Prometheus 2 script.
The Wrap report also indicated that the character David, played in Prometheus by Michael Fassbender, would return, although it was still unclear whether Fassbender would reprise the role.
Prometheus 2 is scheduled to open in March 2016.
