A New York City block on the Upper West Side will be renamed in honor of the great jazz musician, Miles Davis. This block was where Davis composed some of his greatest works.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg back in December signed a bill renaming the street into law.

The New York Times reported that the street was named in Davis' honor yesterday and hundreds of fans attended the ceremony of a street sign that reads "Miles Davis Way." This marks a stretch of 77th Street between Riverside and West End.

For 25 years, the legendary jazz trumpeter lived in an apartment building at 312 West 77th Street.

The movement to make the block a landmark was led by Shirley Zafirau, a former neighbor of Davis. Zafirau still lives on the block that is now named after Davis, The Huffington Post added.

Davis died of pneumonia, respiratory failure and a stroke back in 1991. He was 65 when he died.

He was known as a famous American jazz artist, trumpeter, bandleader, and composer.
