Muslim scholars address the kidnapping of Nigerian schoolgirls

Muslim scholars are calling for the release of 270 Nigerian schoolgirls, after their kidnapping three weeks ago.

The Islamic Fiqh Academy has said that the kidnapping is against the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad and that the crime contradicts humanitarian principles. The academy, based in Saudi Arabia, is part of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The OIC consists of 57 Muslim majority member nations. The OIC let their thoughts be known and took a stand against Boko Haram on Thursday. OIC’s Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission released a statement, saying, "Right to education is a fundamental human right, and is in consonance with the basic tenets of Islam," according to the Associated Press.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said that his nation was under attack from terrorists who have kidnapped schoolgirls and killed people. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Nigerian President thanked China, the U.S., and the U.K. for their diplomacy in dealing with Boko Haram. The Nigerian President wishes for a “beginning of the end” of this terror in his country.
