Nicolas Cage will star in Voltage Films’ Pay the Ghost, a supernatural thriller.

The film will be directed by Uli Edel, according to Cinema Blend. Edel’s credits include Christiane F. and Body of Evidence, but it was his 2008 film The Baader Meinhof Complex that brought him widespread acclaim. Dennis Iliadis, who directed 2009’s The Last House on the Left, was originally slated to direct.

Pay the Ghost was originally a short story by Tim Lebbon, ComingSoon.net noted. The story begins when a couple’s son is kidnapped on Halloween. One year later, they begin to feel their son’s mysterious presence. Their macabre search leads them to New York, where they encounter an evil spirit. Day Kay adapted the story for the screen.

Variety reported that Cage’s recent role in Joe was what interested producers in signing him for the role. A female lead is also being sought to co-star with Cage.

Cage’s upcoming films include the thriller Rage and the remake of Left Behind.
