The New Orleans Saints prized free-agent acquisition missed organized team activities following back surgery to correct a disc issue.
According to The Times-Picayune, coach Sean Payton told reporters that the newly acquired Jairus Byrd underwent the surgery on Thursday and is expected to be back for training camp.
"He's having a surgical procedure on his back for a disc," Payton said. "It's been asymptomatic but it's something we wanted to do and he as well, to alleviate any issues coming in the fall. He'll be back here in a week. For this next week, he won't be at these OTAs, he'll be going through his rehab.”
The coach did not specify exactly what the disc issue was but said that the Byrd has dealt with it before and the surgery was recommended, but not necessary.
The 27-year-old missed five games last season with the Buffalo Bills, but made the Pro Bowl for the third time.
Pro-Football-Refernce.com noted that the safety has recorded 22 interceptions and 256 tackles since he entered the league in 2009.
The Saints are expecting big things from the talented receiver this season and signed him to a six-year, $54 million contract in March.
