There are two things musicians can do to get their music to really sell: die or get involved in a controversy. For Solange Knowles, her major controversy - her decision to kick and punch Jay Z in an elevator - has done exactly that. Her songs experienced an incredible boost in the days after the tape surfaced.

Nielsen SoundScan data provided to HipHopDX last week show that during the week that ended on May 18, Knowles sold 2,000 digital downloads for her songs. That’s more than triple the week before, when she sold just 600 digital downloads.

Knowles was seen punching and kicking her famous brother-in-law in an elevator surveillance tape that was leaked to TMZ after the Met Gala. Her sister, Beyonce, who has had a much more successful career than Knowles, was also in the elevator.

Jay and Beyonce later issued a statement, asking for privacy and noting that they had worked their differences out.

“As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it,” the couple said in the statement. “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”

Of course, the boost in song sales may have made it easier for Knowles to put aside her differences with her famous relatives.
