It seems that Sony's "all in" style with the promotion of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has paid off. The film opened with late night showings on Thursday and has already made $35.5 million at the domestic box office on Friday.
The sequel was shown on 4,324 screens in the United States, pulling in an average of $8,210 per screen, Entertainment Weekly added.
The late night showings on Thursday brought in a total of $8.7 million which was added into the $35.5 million total for Friday.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Emma Stone, and Jamie Foxx, along with a number of other famous comic book villains.
Analysts are predicting that the comic book film could take in over $92 million during its opening weekend, while other predictions aim higher with a total of $100 million. Internationally the movie has performed above what was expected. The film broke opening day records in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
The films total budget has been estimated at around $250 million, which includes the aggressive marketing that Sony has put into the picture. Sony owns the character rights to Spider-Man, so they are expanding their cinematic universe with him at the center. Sony has already announced plans for villain spin off films including, Venom and Sinister SIx.
