The 67th Annual Cannes International Film Festival came to a glamorous conclusion on Saturday night with the announcement of top prize winners at its renowned award ceremony.
Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan took home the Palme D’Or, the festival’s top award, for his drama Winter Sleep.
According to The Guardian, Ceylan used his acceptance speech to dedicate the award to the “young people” struggling in the nation’s unstable political climate, as well as to the 301 miners killed in the recent coal mine fire in the city of Soma.
The second-highest award, the Grand Prix, went to Italian director Alice Rohrwacher for her film Le Meraviglie (The Wonders in English). Julianne Moore won the Award for Best Actress for her role in the twisted Hollywood story Maps to the Stars, and the UK’s Timothy Spall won Best Actor for his performance as the titular character in Mr. Turner.
