A Utah congressman suggested on Saturday that he is in favor of bringing back the firing squad as a method of execution.
Republican Rep. Paul Ray made the suggestion and said he plans on introducing a proposal in the state during the next legislation session, reports The Associated Press. Utah did away with death by firing squad back in 2004.
He feels like it is a more humane option for capital punishment. "It sounds like the Wild West, but it's probably the most humane way to kill somebody," the legislator said. "It sounds draconian. It sounds really bad, but the minute the bullet hits your heart, you're dead. There's no suffering."
Some critics of the idea contend that it isn't as simple as that, according to The Washington Times. Death Penalty Information Center executive director Richard Dieter said, "The idea is that it would be very quick and accurate but just a little movement by the person could change that."
Ray's idea comes after Oklahoma botched the lethal injection execution of Clayton Lockett in April. He managed to survive nearly an hour after being given the drugs before dying of a massive heart attack.
