Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible 5 has been in the writing process for over a year now, but it appears that it is going to be gaining the pen of an unlikely source: video game writer Will Staples.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Staples, who helped write such video games like Need for Speed: Rivals and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, will be rewriting the script for the upcoming sequel.

Although Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) was attached to write the script almost a year ago today, he wrote the script before McQuarrie was hired as the movie's director. As such, it is possible that the director wants to start moving the film in different directions.

In addition to this film, Staples has been attached to write a number of movies in various levels of development, including , a starring and directing vehicle for Ben Affleck, , a starring vehicle for Jeremy Renner, and Myth for Fox.

has been set for release on Christmas Day 2015.
