Washington, D.C. has been announced as the fittest city in the United States according to The American Fitness Index of 2014.

The Medical Daily reports that the American College of Sports Medicine has released a report of a current list of the fittest cities in the U.S. according to the American Fitness Index (AFI).

The AFI is a report which details the current state of health and fitness in different cities. They use walking, rates of disease, smoking and amounts of park land as factors to determine the health of its residents.

"The AFI data report is a snapshot of the state of health in the community and an evaluation of the infrastructure, community assets and policies that encourage healthy and fit lifestyles," Walter Thompson, chair of the AFI's advisory board said in a statement.

The report uses vital information from the U.S. Census and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide legitimate and comparable data.

Minneapolis, MN, Portlans, OR, Denver, CO and San Francisco, CA make up the rest of the top five. Nashville, TN, Indianapolis, IN, Oklahoma City, OK, Louisville, KY and Memphis, TN take the bottom five spots.

The index "was created for communities to assess their level of health and fitness, assess areas that could use improvement, and to increase their scores over time," Thompson said.

According to USA Today, a grant from the WellPoint Foundation will work with organizations in Cincinnati, Las Vegas and Miami to use the AFI report to help improve their communities health efforts.
