The U.S. department of Agriculture has mandated that the Wolverine packing company recall 1.8 million pounds of its meat after several cases of E coli illnesses have been linked to the meat. The restaurants who received the infected meat were ordered to throw it out.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the meat was made from March 31rst to April 18th and then was shipped out for restaurants. The meat was shipped to parts of Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Missouri as voiced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service.
11 cases of the illness have been caused by the contaminated meat, five of which were in Michigan.
Five Michigan residents who consumed hamburger that was not fully cooked grew ill shortly after. Two of the five were hospitalized, one from Kent county and one from Ottawa county, but all five should make a full recovery, according to Michigan Live.
The USDA announced that none of the contaminated meat was given to the Department of Defense or that national school lunch program.
No deaths have been linked to this incident.
