X-Men: Days of Future Past easily snagged the top spot at the box office for Memorial Day weekend, blowing past Adam Sandler's Blended and last week's No. 1, Godzilla.
For the four-day period, the latest superhero film from 20th Century Fox grossed $111 million, which hit projections, but falls short of the last film in the franchise to open on the holiday weekend, reports Forbes. X-Men: The Last Stand managed to earn $124 million in 2006. Still, the film has performed well overseas, grossing an additional $191 million.
Warner Bros.' Godzilla was a distant second place after grossing $39.4 million, which is a 67 percent drop from the film's opening weekend. Much like X-Men, the film has done well overseas, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with $166.6 million in international sales.
Sandler's Blended took third with a miserable $18.2 million for the four-day weekend, making it one of the worst opening weekends for the comedian. Still, the film only had a $45 million budget, which the film could possibly reach.
Seth Rogen-Zac Efron's Neighbors did fairly well in the fourth spot, earning $17.2 million to be right on the tail of Sandler. The R-rated comedy managed to also pass the $100 million mark at the box office.
Rounding out the top five was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which grossed $7.8 million on the weekend. The film has a worldwide cume of $676.1 million after strong overseas weekend, where the film brought in $11.2 million.
