Ann Coulter must have decided that she had been out of the news too long, so just before Team U.S.A.’s big match against Germany on Thursday, the conservative pundit decided to call the growing interest in soccer a sign of ‘moral decay.’
In a column on Wednesday, Coulter said that she had been holding “off on writing about soccer for a decade - or about the length of the average soccer game - so as not to offend anyone.” She then continued, “But enough is enough. Any growing interest in soccer can only be a sign of the nation's moral decay.”
According to Coulter, soccer doesn’t recognize individual achievement, ignoring the several international superstars the game has created, from Pele to David Beckham.
“In soccer, the blame is dispersed and almost no one scores anyway,” she wrote. “There are no heroes, no losers, no accountability, and no child's fragile self-esteem is bruised. There's a reason perpetually alarmed women are called ‘soccer moms,’ not ‘football moms.’”
She also took aim at the “liberal soccer moms,” since they think that boys and girls can play soccer together. Apparently, no real sport is co-ed. In addition, Coulter doesn’t like the fact that you can’t use your hands in the game (you can’t use them in hockey either, unless you’re the goalie...just like in soccer) and she despises scoreless ties.
There’s also a problem with the world’s most popular sport being “foreign” and uses the metric system, according to Coulter.
The obvious trolling from Coulter was met with the same response of utter disgust that her past comments have earned. But even Fox News’ Shepard Smith couldn’t take it, notes Mediate. After the U.S. moved on to the next round of the FIFA World Cup tournament, Smith said, “I’m told it’s a sign of moral decay,” later adding, “It’s not.”
Well, we know of at least one person who won’t be watching Tuesday’s match with Belgium.
