At least five people were killed after a machete-wielding gang and gunmen attacked a Kenyan village on Tuesday.

Witnesses told CNN that the armed gang went from house to house attacking residents in the Kasakakairu village.

In addition to the deceased, six more people were hospitalized with cuts and other serious injuries.

No one has claimed responsibility for the most recent attack and authorities believe that unlike last week’s violence, which killed 60 people, this attack may not be linked to militants.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Lamu County Deputy Gov. Eric Mugo said that the latest attack "was just local criminals taking advantage of the situation"—possibly to settle old land disputes.

The string of assaults that have been occurring in the country have put political pressure on the government to secure Kenya’s borders and its tourism industry.

Last week’s attacks in Mpeketoni were the worst since gunmen stormed Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall last September and killed 67 people.
