Shocking footage has surfaced online of the horrific moments when madmen attacked unsuspecting players of the traditional Chinese game Mahjong, with axes on Sunday.

According to the New York Daily News, surveillance footage of the incident was first posted online Monday by state broadcaster CCTV.

The video shows three men pull out axes and attack the civilians at the chess hall in Hotan City, Xinjiang. In an attempt to protect and shield themselves from the ax-wielding maniacs, the players throw up chairs and try to get the attackers out of the hall.

The three assailants can then be seen running out the building and are later chased and overpowered by armed police officers.

Chinese State Media reported that two of the attackers died from serious injuries. The third was wounded and taken into custody.

Four victims were injured in the attack, which occurred amid a crackdown on violence against innocent civilians in the Xinjiang region.

Officials have not announced a possible motive for this attack.
