A musical satire about former President Bill Clinton is heading to New York and it will take two actors to play the very different sides of the president.
Clinton will make its New York premiere during the New York Musical Theatre Festival next month. The book was written by Paul Hodge and Michael Hodge, with music and lyrics by Paul Hodge.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the play premiered at the Edingurgh Festival Fringe in 2012. It features two Bill Clintons, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Al Gore, Newt Gingrich and, obviously, Monica Lewinsky jammed into the two-hour runtime.
“Clinton needs to be played by two actors because he led two parallel lives,” Paul Hodge told the New York Daily News. He later added, “Clinton was such a pivotal President and fascinating human being he was a natural for a musical.”
Karl Kenzler was cast to play the smart Clinton, while Duke Lafoon will play the sex-crazed Clinton.
“Everyone gets satirized,” Paul Hodge said. “But the Republicans are the villains.”
Clinton will run from July 18 to 25 at the Pershing Square Signature Center.
Of course, the musical comes as Hillary Clinton remains in the news. She just released her memoir Hard Choices on her time as Secretary of State and it is widely expected that she will run for president in 2016.
