The Fault In Our Stars managed to easily take the top spot for Friday at the box office, especially after a soft showing from Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow.
The Shailene Woodley-led The Fault In Our Stars raked in $26.1 million at the box office, including $8.2 million from Thursday previews. According to Forbes, though the film might end up being frontloaded, the flick could still end up earning anywhere between $47 million to $58 million for the weekend, which is especially great considering the movie was made on a teeny $12 million budget.
Apparently the lesson for studios to be learned this weekend is not to bother scheduling against YA fare as the other new wide release, Cruise's science fiction action film Edge of Tomorrow, only managed a soft $10.65 million in its first full day. The film is expected to gross about $30 million for the weekend, which might be good enough for the second spot, but will likely will place it third.
Why? Well Angelina Jolie's Maleficent still looks to be performing quite well at the box office after grossing $10.1 million on Friday, which pushed it past the $100 million mark, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The live-action Disney film is projected to earn $32 million for the weekend.
X-Men: Days of Future Past managed $4.5 million for Friday and is projected to earn another $14.7 million, which would give the Fox film $189 million at the domestic box office.
Rounding out the top five is the miserable A Million Ways to Die, which grossed $2.2 million to start the comedy's second weekend. The Seth MacFarlane film will likely earn $6.8 million, pushing up its domestic total to $29.7 million.
