Authorities have said that a 12-year-old Las Vegas Boy Scout is dead after a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a camp in San Diego.
Police Officer Matt Tortorella told USA Today that police received a call that a boy had shot himself in the head Monday at 7:36 a.m. at the camp on Fiesta Island.
According to the Associated Press, investigators did find a gun in the boy’s tent but it is not clear at this time how he got the weapon into the camp. Whether or not the incident was accidental or intentional is also being investigated.
The Boy Scouts said that crisis counselors have been made available for those attending the camp.
"This is an extremely sad day for our entire scouting family," the Boy Scouts of America said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and all those who experienced this tragedy. Our top priority is providing support to our community and for those in the grieving process."
