The coast guard rescued a 57-year-old who attempted a journey from California to Hawaii on kayak early Tuesday.

According to theL.A. Times, the man was prepared with electronic equipment and solar panel technology to charge it, but the solar panel malfunctioned on Saturday. The man, who attempted to turn around, sent a distress signal to the coast guard on Tuesday after he became disoriented, the LA Times reported.

A helicopter spotted the man who was about 60 miles southwest of Santa Barbara's point conception, according to ABC News. His name was not released, but there were no reports of injury. The coast guard rescued him after he spent 11 days at sea.

"A voyage from California to Hawaii is a long and treacherous journey for any vessel and exponentially more dangerous for a kayaker," Petty Officer 2nd Class Timothy Hall said in the statement reported by the ABC News."His preparedness allowed him to call for help but he is very lucky to be alive."

The journey, had he made it, would have been nearly 2,400 miles.
