Brendan Johnson, 19, and Cassandra Rieb, 18, were arrested Tuesday and were suspects in the killing of his 70-year-old grandparents, Charles and Shirley Severance. The couple was accused of sneaking into the home last month and strangling both grandparents.
"Together we went and we did it together," Rieb told investigators in the court documents. "Like one get one and one get the other."
According to the The Associated Press, the teens told authorities that they had planned to smother the elderly couple while they slept, but matters became complicated when they entered to find them awake in the home. Johnson told police that he began choking the man, but believed he died of a heart attack. Together the teens then strangled and stabbed his grandmother, disbursing her body parts throughout two states.
Johnson and Rieb said they planned to do the same with the grandfather’s body, but it was too heavy to carry,” NY Daily News reports. Instead they cleaned the home and called 9-1-1 nine days later reporting that they found the body.
Johnson’s inheritance was $20,000 and the grandparent’s small house. Instead, both he and Rieb face first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, forgery and theft. They are currently being held without bond.
