Conan O’Brien grew up in New England, but he almost lost a home he owns there due to unpaid taxes. The Rhode Island home was about to hit the auction block until he paid the taxes and avoided losing it.
In a story about the town of Westerly’s upcoming tax sale on Tuesday, The Westerly Sun reported that the late night talkshow host owed $8,000 in taxes on his home there. The property is valued at $722,900 and probably would have been one of the key lots in the auction.
However, the property was taken out of the sale after O’Brien’s office was notified. On Friday, O’Brien paid the back taxes.
“Due to a clerical error as a result of my accounting firm in Los Angeles moving offices, we have never received any notice about this tax bill,” O’Brien’s rep, Drew Shane, wrote in an email to the paper.
As The Providence Journal notes, O’Brien, 51, grew up in Massachusetts and went to Harvard.
O’Brien currently hosts TBS’ hit talk show, Conan. He recently signed a contract extension to continue hosting the show through 2018.
