Several people were killed by a suicide bomber who set off explosives packed on a tricycle taxi. The explosion took place a public venue where people gathered to watch the World Cup.
According to the Associated Press at least 15 people were critically wounded. Hospital workers expect the death toll to rise as those with causalities and critical wounds are brought in.
As the Brazil-Mexico match began, witnesses of the blasts said the tricycle taxi was driven into the outdoor viewing area.
For fear of future attacks, the Nigerian government has warned people from gathering in public to watch the World Cup.
Earlier this month, an explosion killed at least 12 people who had gathered to watch the World Cup at a public venue.
The location of the explosion, Damaturu, has been targeted in the past by the militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, reported Reuters.
Witnesses are blaming Boko Haram for the blasts. However, no one has yet taken responsibility.
According to BBC News, the group, whose name loosely translates to "Western education is forbidden" deems Western cultural as evil, and intends to establish an Islamic state for northern Nigeria.
The group, which was founded in 2002, has wrecked havoc across Nigeria.
Boko Haram was also responsible for the abduction of more than 250 schoolgirls last month in Nigeria.
