'Fault in Our Stars' outdoes Cruise's 'Edge of Tomorrow' for No. 1 box office

The Fault in Our Stars took in $48.2 million opening weekend, shooting it past Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow for the No. 1 box office spot.

Fault in our Stars completely overshot its projected opening weekend, already making four times its cost of $12 million, based off an estimate by Fox, the LA Times reports. Edge of Tomorrow came slow out of the gate, making $29.1 million domestically. The film cost $178 million to produce.

Fault in our Stars also received an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie review site that doesn't exactly hand out A+'s.

Along with Disney's Maleficent, Fault's box office success turned heads during a male-dominated movie going season of action-packed, visual films. The female demographic was never underestimated by Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst at Rentrak. "Girls rule at the box office when a property like this resonates with a young female audience," Variety reported him saying.

Fault is based on a successful novel by John Green about the relationship of two cancer patients, played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. It was directed by Josh Boone and was shown in 3,173 theaters, accumulating most of its profits on opening day, as its grosses fell 52% on Saturday.

Still, The Fault in Our Stars has shifted everyone's attention away from the flashy, explosion-filled action flicks to an organic, emotional summer film.
