Between the enjoyable Neighbors, the less-than-stellar Blended and the mediocre A Million Ways to Die in the West, this summer has been a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to comedy. But, with 22 Jump Street not far away with its June 13 release date on the horizon, is it possible that the summer can turn thing around?

Well, if its first reviews are to be believed, the answers seems to be: yes.

Although only a handful of reviews have been released so far, these first couple at least suggest that this sequel lives up to its original.

First, Scott Foundas from Variety felt the movie is a "sly, self-referencing commentary on the inevitability of sequels" that:

"...swaps high school for college and prom for spring break but otherwise sticks snugly to the prior film’s winning formula, mining the resultant doublings and repetitions for maximum absurdist hilarity. (Think Samuel Beckett’s Animal House.)"

Additionally, Oliver Lyttelton of The Playlist gave the movie a B+ and had the following to note:

"(I)f Lord and Miller can keep up the quality to this degree, we'd happily watch a Jump Street movie every couple of years for the foreseeable future."

Rob Carnevale, of The List, appears to be among the film's biggest supporters so far, saying the following in his 4/5 star review that "it's a wildly entertaining feel-good movie" that rates as not just one of the best mainstream comedies of the year, but "also one of the finest sequels you('re) likely to see."

Not quite as positive, but still favorable, was Tom Huddleston of Time Out, who, in his 3/5 star review, writes about the plot is looser and the action doesn't pop as well as the original's did, but that it "knows how to play to its strengths."

In particular, he felt that "Tatum’s performance here is even more puppy-dog lovable than last time, and his scenes with Hill possess a goofy, low-key warmth too often lacking in big-budget comedy." These, and other elements, give the movie enough goodwill to "balance out the clunky bits."

The only negative review thus far comes from Gabe Toro of Cinema Blend, who gave the movie a 2.5 out of 5 and stated:

"22 Jump Street film is bigger and it freely admits it, repetitive and boastful of the fact, and ultimately completely unnecessary."

While the reviews differ in deciding whether or not this sequel is as good or better than the original, most seem to feel, so far at least, that this is an at least respectable sequel that should please the fans of the original.

Whether or not that is true will be determined on June 13th.
