If yesterday’s 30th anniversary for Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. didn’t make you feel old, perhaps this will. This weekend marks the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters’ theatrical release. To mark the occasion, Sony is re-releasing the film in theaters.
Sony announced today that the film will be back in over 700 theaters for Labor Day weekend in the U.S. and Canada. The film recently underwent a major restoration and was remastered in 4K.
“Ghostbusters is still one of our studio's most beloved franchises – I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it's a real thrill for me to see that it's still connecting with audiences everywhere,” Rory Bruer, president, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures, said in a statement. “On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again.”
After the theatrical run, Sony will release another edition of the film on Blu-ray, using the 4K remaster, on Sept. 16. At the same time, a 25th anniversary release of Ghostbusters II will be available. That film has not been available on Blu-ray before. You can also get the full bells-and-whistles edition, which includes both films and a Slimer action figure. No full-size Stay Puff Marshmallow man, unfortunately.
Sony also launched a new Ghostbusters.com and Sony’s Legacy Recordings label is planning a deluxe soundtrack release.
Sony didn’t give any updates on the long-gestating Ghostbusters III, which is still reportedly in the works, even after Harold Ramis’ death.
Both Ghostbusters movies were directed by Ivan Reitman and starred Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson.
