Godzilla, Gareth Edwards’s reboot of the classic monster movie series, has made over $10.9 million dollars in the Chinese box office, making it the largest premiere of the year for the country.
According to Variety, the film “outgrossed this year’s previous opening day champs X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and is expected to finish No. 1 in the region.” As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, it was also “the biggest opening day of all time for a Warner Bros. title” and has now earned over “$400 million worldwide, including $188.1 million to date in North America.”
The film has easily outsold its original budget of $160 million, which was co-financed Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that a sequel has already been ordered.
