A 61-year-old volunteer fell to his death after trying to rescue a 25-year-old hiker who had fallen earlier down a Washington state waterfall.
According to The Daily News, the hiker, along with a companion, had separated from a group of four to hike to Pilchuck Falls, approximately 35 miles from Seattle.
The hiker fell about 100 feet when he and his companion tried to hike back up from the falls. His companion tried to help him, but he became stuck and had to hang on to a tree to avoid falling too.
The search-and-rescue team was called, and the companion who was hanging on a tree was found and helped. However, the volunteer ended up falling as well and died as a result.
Skagit County Sheriff's Office representatives did not reply to requests for comments, reports Reuters.
The bodies of the two men were recovered, but their identities have not been released.
According to their Facebook page, the volunteer-based Rescue team has been saving lives for 35 years.
