From the moment that Disney announced they would be taking the Tony-award winning musical Into the Woods and bringing it to the big screen, it was expected there were going to be some cuts.
For those who know the show can agree there are elements to it that is very not Disney and will not be either covered up or cut from the film entirely. Playbill broke the news when Stephen Sondheim met up with high school theatre teachers at Sardi’s to discuss the difficulties that emerge from being in an academic setting and having to deal with artistic censorship.
Spoilers for the movie below.
Rapunzel will not die in this adaptation nor will Cinderella’s Prince Charming have an affair with the Baker’s wife. Plus expect a much less horny Big Bad Wolf as the creepy relationship between him and Little Red Riding Hood is no more. In addition the song, “Amy Moment”, has “probably been cut” and some new songs have been added to the film to fix some plot holes.
On the topic of artistic censorship, Entertainment Weekly reports Sondheim laid it all on the table by commenting with, “There has to be a point at which you don’t compromise anymore, but that may mean that you won’t get anyone to sell your painting or perform your musical.”
Into The Woods is set to open Christmas 2015.
