Weddings and the Federal Bureau of Investigation usually don’t go together, but then again, middle-aged men usually don’t compete in spelling bees. After making his directorial debut with Bad Words, Jason Bateman has been tapped to do a Universal comedy that will somehow combine weddings with the FBI.
The new project is being written by David Bar Katz, working from previous drafts by David Flebotte and Phil Alden Robinson, reports TheWrap.
Bateman will produce under his Aggregate Films banner with James Garavente, along with Landscape Entertainment’s Bob Cooper. Universal executives Kristin Lowe and Sara Scott are overseeing for the studio.
This project has been apparently in the works for years, but still doesn’t have a title. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. once had it with hopes that Steve Carell might do it, but the Foxcatcher star moved on a long time ago.
The plot centers on two FBI agents who have a fake affair and get married, all in some scheme to get the mob.
Bateman is currently working on The Family Fang, which he will direct first. Filming on that project will start in New York next month.
The Arrested Development actor has made the transition to movies easily, starring alongside Melissa McCarthy in Universal’s Identity Thief. He appears with Tina Fey in This Is Where I Leave You and will also be in a Horrible Bosses sequel.
