The Recording Industry Association of America awarded Katy Perry with the distinction of being the highest-selling digital act on Wednesday.
She was presented with an award at a ceremony held at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., Billboard Reports. Perry has sold more than 72 million digital singles and is the first musician to pass the 70 million mark.
The RIAA announced that Perry has 56 multi-Platinum digital singles awards, along with 18 Gold and 16 Platinum awards. She currently has sold more than 20 million more digital singles than anyone else.
According to CNN, Rihanna has the second-most digital album sales, with Taylor Swift coming in right behind her with 51 million singles sold online.
"Katy Perry is a force to be reckoned with in music," said RIAA chairman and CEO Cary Sherman. "She embodies all that makes a true global superstar: the musical talent, the extraordinary drive and genuine charisma, and an intrinsic connection with her fans."
The RIAA has been tracking digital single sales since 2004 and in 2013 started to monitor streaming as well.
