Mariah Carey may have earned another Top 10 album, but that is about the only bit of good news to come from the release of Me. I Am Mariah … The Elusive Chanteuse. The album sold less than half what her last non-holiday album did in its first week and was kept from the No. 1 spot by Coldplay.
Coldplay’s Ghost Stories sold a whopping 383,000 copies last week, giving it the best debut of the year. Obviously, it wasn’t going to sell that many in its second week, but it still stayed at No. 1. Billboard reports that Nielsen SoundScan numbers show that the album sold 83,000 copies in its second week.
After two weeks, Ghost Stories has sold 466,000 copies, which already makes it the second-best selling album of the year. The top selling album is the Frozen soundtrack by a long shot, with 2.5 million copies sold.
Brantley Gilbert also stayed at No. 2 with Just As I Am, which sold 65,000 copies in its second week.
Elusive Chaintise is Carey’s 17th Top 10 album and first non-holiday release since 2009’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. While Memoirs also started at No. 3, with bowed with 168,000 copies sold. Elusive Chauntise started with less than half of that with 58,000 copies.
This is her worst debut sales week for a non-holiday release since 1991’s Emotions kicked off with 156,000 copies at No. 4.
Frozen added 58,000 copies last week, which is good enough for No. 4. The Secret by Austin Mahone began its run at No. 5 with 46,000 copies.
The rest of the Top 10 features Now 50 (41,000 copies); Michael Jackson’s Xscape (35,000); The Black Keys’ Turn Blue (32,000); Crowder’s Neon Steeple (22,000); and Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic (18,000).
Azalea's “Fancy” topped the Digital Songs chart with 283,000 copies sold.
