Martin Sheen is returning to television, but not through traditional means. The iconic actor is joining Grace and Frankie, the new Netflix series starring fellow Hollywood icons Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
Sheen is set to play the husband of Grace, Fonda’s character, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday.
The 13-episode series was announced back in March, and centers on the titular friends, who suddenly discover that their husbands are in love and plan to divorce them so they can marry each other. Tomlin will play Frankie and her husband’s character hasn’t been cast yet, but whoever takes that role may have to be as big a name as Sheen.
Of course, this is hardly Sheen’s first time on television. He recently did a stint on his son Charlie Sheen’s FX sitcom Anger Management and won a Golden Globe for his performance on The West Wing. On the feature side, he’s currently working with Warren Beatty on a Howard Hughes biopic.
The talent behind the camera on Grace and Frankie is as big as the stars in front. It was created by Marta Kauffman (Friends) and Howard J. Morris (Home Improvement) and the first episode will be directed by Tate Taylor (The Help). The producers include Kauffman, Morris, Fonda, Tomlin and Paula Weinstein. Executive producers are Taylor, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross.
Grace and Frankie will debut next year.
